Academy Director Courtney Biasatti has completed her roster of coaches with the announcement of Raul Bernal to coach the ACADEMY 17 National team, which welcomes back four starters from last year’s 16 National team that capped their 44-win season with a trip to the AAU tournament in Orlando.

“I was glad to know that I would be wanted for the coaching staff of ACADEMY, there are many good coaches on this staff including Courtney, so to be added to the mix was of great joy,” said Coach Bernal after accepting the position.

Biasatti is equally pleased and excited for her new hire to take charge, as he will begin his 13th year as a club coach, most recently with Extec, where he coached the 18 Open team to fourth place in the Lone Star Regionals for the 2008-09 season. Later at the Nationals that same year the Extec 18’s took 11th place playing in the Open division under the direction of Coach Bernal.

“What an impressive coaching bio, Coach Bernal is going to bring experience and demand the best from the 17’s team,” said Biasatti, who feels the toughest task will be getting to know the players as six new players have come on board for the year.

Bernal took charge of his new team over the two-day try-out and his first impressions are very positive.

“I was extremely pleased to see how strong and competitive this team will be and I can say with the utmost confidence that we could compete in the Open level very well,” praised Bernal.

The new coach is looking for a few 16s who are playing up to carry a large load and feels he has a nice balance of players.

With all the new faces, Biasatti evaluated the challenge ahead.

“I would say the toughest task will be getting to know the players on and off the court and really getting to know them they can do as individuals and together,” concluded Biasatti.
