Granted the top seed in the initial pool and 20th overall among the 90 US teams looking to qualify for the JO’s at the upcoming event at the Baltimore Convention Center March 27-29, the ACADEMY 16 National squad will be facing the ultimate challenge.
“We have to win the whole ting to get a bid,” said Coach Sean Huiet, who knows there are additional bids to be had when the team travels to Dallas in mid April and Houston the first weekend in May. But the qualifying event in Baltimore rewards only one club a spot in the Junior Olympics this July in Reno.
Texas teams will have a presence in this tournament with Southwest Juniors tabbed as the event’s early favorite, as they were rewarded with the top seed.
While winning the entire tourney is a tall order, it will still be a positive event for the 16’s because of the competition they’ll face from the big city teams from the northeast, which will push their talents to the max.
“I think we have great shot at doing very well at this tournament if we stay focused and play together as a team and we really need to put together three days of great volleyball,” noted Huiet.
This squad has been through its share of qualifiers and is aware of how the competition will increase with each match.
“I think we know what we need to do and we are capable of it if we stay focused we’ll have a great shot to do well,” added Huiet.
